If you use canned pumpkin, or just like to keep some on hand, head to the store soon (like this week). There is an honest to God shortage of pumpkin this year (you'll notice most chains only have one size of jack-o-lantern pumpkin this year, too) and it's going to be VERY scarce as the holidays approach.

yikes, thanks for the warning. I can just imagine the GT-induced run on pumpkin this week! The stores are going to wonder what's up!

Hey, just wondering...why the shortage?

I saw something on the news about the weather affecting the pumpkin growning season. That's why the pumpkins for Halloween carving went up so much per pound, so I guess it goes for canned pumpkin too.
Another thing, some stores only carry the large cans of pumpkin during the holiday season, so I stock up.

Poor growing season, etc.... I talked to my boss for a minute this morning. Today, a good size pallet would have normally shipped to just about every store and we got nothing. Looks like pecan pie is going to have a place on most peoples' menus this Thanksgiving!!!!
Speaking of Thanksgiving, HOLY CRAP the price of peanut oil went up. Frying turkeys is enormously popular here (and the source of many Darwin award worthy news stories afterwards), but I have a feeling a lot of people are going to rethink their plans when they see that the 3 gallon box of peanut oil is $39.99 this year!!!! I'm anxious to see what the el-cheapo frozen turkeys go for once they're on sale. I bet we saw our last year for $0.79/lb in 2007.

Be sure to get plain pumpkin and not pie filling with the spices already in it.

Our local Super WalMart had tons of it, Libby's brand, for $1.06 a can.

I will head to Whole Foods tomorrow! at $.99 a can, you can't beat that price!
They always think I am going to bake. They look at me weird when I say it is for my dogs!

I'd been wondering what was going on. The grocery store I normally shop at hasn't had plain pumpkin for several weeks - just this past Friday they'd found some organic plain pumpkin and had that stocked in place of the usual Libby's. Our local Kroger was out too. DH found a whole bunch of plain Libby's at our local Walmart, though, at $1.06 per can (which I see he posted about). So we'll probably get more from there, or use Metamucil instead, though it's certainly less tasty for the dogs that way.

Thanks for the heads up - will stock up tomorrow. Last week I stocked up on H&B supplies, cause someone on GT said all those products were going up. I think I need more pantry space.

Actually most of what is in canned pumpkin is Hubbard Squash. Squash had a rough year out here in WA state at least. The farm I work for had a roughly 80% loss on squash and a total loss on butternut squash. we have lots of pumpkins though.

When I went to get some last week - they only had the mega-sized cans and not many. I probably should've stocked up then - I didn't realize it would be an ongoing shortage

Off to the store (maybe I'll try Whole Foods this time). Sonie LOVES her pumpkin!!

If you have a Save-a-Lot near you, they carry the big cans during the holidays.
