Hi all...I just adopted a grey about a month ago. He's the best! Funny name (Dk Pick Nick)...but oh well! tongue.gif

We're having some food issues, however, and I am beginning to think I might be doing something wrong. I'm following all the instructions I find here, but no luck. He did have the big D when I got him, adjusting to his new home and all. But, I put him on a bland diet for 2 weeks (got him tested also, and it was all fine) and when I slowly switched him to kibble it went very well. Just when I thought we were golden, 1 & 1/2 cups with a bit of rice & pumpkin...it came back. Back to bland for 2 weeks & slowly mixed in new brand of food, this time without pumpkin...again, things looked hopeful with same result. It seems he gets to the bottom of a small bag & then all goes downhill.

He was on Nutro Chicken, Rice, and Oatmeal first then we tried Canidae (thanks board polls). Does this usually happen or am I doing something wrong? Should I continue with the food until he adjusts or switch until I find the food that works?

I feel so bad for the guy...he LOVES LOVES LOVES to eat, but that can't be fun in the end. No pun intended. Thanks for the help!

I think you should just stick to a food for a bit longer before switching it up.

I got my grey in July and he STILL has the Big D once in a while, ususally at the end of the day after he's already pooped once or twice.

When we got Nova, same thing and I just started adding Peptio Bismol pills, and it took a couple of days, but it cleared it all up and no problems since. I think it's more stress personally, because I had not changed her diet at all, kept her only on the food the group had given with her. Since she was already going through the big D, I just switched it, added the Pepto, and have had absolutely no trouble since.

Thanks so much! I'll just tough it out for a bit & hope for the best!

Where are you located? I would not use pepto.

I'm in Ma. I did try fasting him for 12 hours yesterday as well, with very little success. sad.gif

Perhaps you possibly mistaking Big D withy loose stools. Big D means explosive wet poop that your dog can't control -- as in all over your house. Loose stools are when your dog makes it outside and has wet poops that come out the same way firm poops do.

Big D will dehydrate your pup and something needs to be done about it.

Loose stools are gross, but not a health problem. In fact, a fair number of greys will have a pretty normal poop followed by a loose one -- on the same potty break. If your dog is experiencing loose stools, you are mostly changing the texture of the poop for your sensitivities and not the dog's. That's not a bad thing, but it does mean you can stop worrying about what is "wrong" with your dog.

Something that can help firm up stools is a raw turkey neck from time to time. No, you won't kill your pup even if you are scared of it at first. I certainly was. Bone helps constipate (in our case firm up) poops. Duncan gets 1/2 of one every day and it keeps him firm.

You'll find something that works. There will be lots of ideas to consider.

Glad to have you here. Sounds like you and Pick Nick are a wonderful couple. Now, our job is to turn you into a crazy greyhound owner like the rest of us!

Every once in a while, if Gordon has the 'splody poo (as in, he couldn't hold it and went inside..which is rare) I've given him a kid's dose of pepto - helped soothe his tummy and bum and made things better while he "got over" whatever he'd eaten...I was told it was safe by my adoption group...this not true? unsure.gif

I've never heard a bad thing about giving Pepto, and have done so for years. It always helps. I use the pills, it's much easier to get into the dog rather than trying to force down the chalky liquid (and wearing some of it)

I know that my mom had the same problem with her greyhound and the big D. Jodie was also tooting alot. My mom uses Canidae with some greenbeans and chicken, or with rice, some carrots and Jodie has not had a problem since.
