With the recent issues in pet foods, I was curious to see the shift in what people are feeding their dogs. I found it very helpful when I first joined greytalk to read this poll. I imagine that views have changed and I'd like to see what everyone is doing now for their dogs. Thank you for participating and sharing your knowledge and experience with everyone.
The previous poll was initiated in October of 2005.

Wendy is fed Merrick brand kibble and canned. I alternate the flavors for variety. She also gets raw turkey necks, chicken backs and marrow bones. One or twice a week, I will boil some organ or muscle meats and add that to her kibble instead of the canned food. I also feed sardines (packed in water, no salt), canned salmon and jack mackeral. Green beef and lamb tripe are a favorite add-in to dry kibble. For snacks, I have begun baking my own treats. Thank you GT'ers for the great liver brownie recipes!

can't vote: I don't use any of the dry or canned choices and if I don't check off one of them, it won't accept what I check for treats. You need an "other" choice.

I feed a mix of kibble, mostly Origen, sometimes Purina One, with a third "meal" of turkey neck, chicken backs and necks, or marrow bones.
Add ons are really a treat as my girls are not picky about kibble as long as it's not Iams: one can Cesar's split between three dogs, tripe, sardines, tuna, tuna or salmon juice, sometimes leftovers from my previous meal like potatoes, rice or stew. Sometimes a veggie slop with broth and garlic.
Treats vary according to whim and deals at the store -- very rarely commercial treats. Homemade dog biscuits (rare around here!) lol.gif Other: chicken livers, stew meat, sardines, popcorn, pizza crust, bread (with butter prefered, thank you very much), garlic toast and of course whatever they steal when I leave the room! rolleyes.gif It's not unusual to find a pizza on top of the TV around here. lol.gif

Wendy is fed Merrick brand kibble and canned.

FWIW the Beef 'n More canned is made by Merrick in the same plant with virtually the same ingredents as Cowboy Cookout. Available at my Sprawlmart for an amazing .53 a can.

Beau (4), Teddy (4) and Chloe (4) eat Pro Plan Chicken. I mix in a teaspoon of either purina one or pumpkin as their "treat" daily.

Polli (9.5 year old broodie) gets 1/2 Purina one 1/2 EVO mixed in with either boiled chicken and rice, purina one chicken or Tripe lamb.

Treats are limited to either Milkbones, Nutro biscuits OR dried chicken tenders. We break up one milkbone to go 3 ways. We don't do a lot of treats.

1. You need an "other" option. (like you've not already been told that a bajillion times, right?)

2. Did you just copy the original list? Because I would imagine that very few folks here feed: Alpo/Beneful/Gravy Train/K&B, whereas I would have liked to see how many folks feed Diamond/Natures Recipe/Blue Buffalo, Bil-Jac kibble, etc.

3. I would have to vote "other" for the most part. I feed raw at home, but the kids get Nutro kibble at one dog-sitter, and whatever kibble I take with them at the other dog-sitter.

4. Canned - only Zoe gets canned. It's the i/d from the vet. She also gets kibble - Nature's Recipe at home, and whatever the dog-sitter is serving when she's there.

I have recently switched from Newman's Own dry food to Timberwolf organics and so far so good! They get dry food in the AM and raw in the evening (usually ground meat with veggies, sometimes chicken quarters and liver--whatever I can get).

For treats: Newman's own chicken flavor, sometimes I stuff a few in a kong sealed with peanut butter; They also love Merrick's dried lamb lung and bully sticks.

I can't wait to try some of the liver brownie recipes! smile.gif

We feed Blue Buffalo/Blue Wilderness dry and mix in a couple spoons full of Blue Buffalo canned. I use a Science Diet (Oral Care) treat when they come in from outside; something their foster families did and I continue. I also give them Blue Buffalo cookies as a special treat and also chews I get from the vet.

I never see my brand of dog food listed- Drs Foster and Smith lamb and rice kibble. I also mix in Nutro Dental.
ahicks51
To add to the raw diet, every now and again I add in part of a can of Tripett, whose instructions should read like a hand grenade: pull pin and throw.
PatricksMom
Canidae Lamb and Rice
Canidae canned after dentals
Mother Hubbard Treats
fourofem
Canidae Lamb and Rice - Dry
Either Canidae or Merrick - Canned
A few pieces of Science Diet Oral Health - Treats

I also mix in vegetables w/ the meals.
gryhndsr4us
Taste of the Wild kibble (buffalo and venison)
Natures Variety raw medallions
Various treats, we try to buy organic varieties but we also do Milk Bone Treats and Pedigree Breath Savers.
KsFrets
Switched from Nutro to Canidea. We are very happy, and no more night time stomache trouble and morning pukes. Better coats too.
Greytluv
Fed Canidae and changed to Kirkland about 3 weeks ago. I don't have an opinion yet. Lots of gas and poops are a little soft. I'm going to give it a few more weeks. I know Kirkland rates really high.

I also add 1/2 can Kirkland wet, split between my three.
EmilyAnne
Henry: Wellness Ocean Core with Merrick's canned, either Cowboy Cookout or Venison Holiday. A probiotic every day, beef heart twice a week, Henry's diet is poultry and grain free.

Riley: Innova senior, with same canned and raw as Henry.
jbox
I feed Pro Plan Selects Turkey & Barley Senior to mine, no canned food, and they get EVO treats. colgate.gif

We use Tripett too-and that is so true! lol.gif lol.gif lol.gif
Taste of the Wild for dry and bully sticks for treats, plus cookies and jerky.
sirsmom
We've been pretty happy with the Pro Plan Selects salmon. One of my dogs has developed "fish breath" so may start mixing it with the Pro Plan turkey. Coats are gorgeous on this food and well tolerated.
Javagirl
You definitely need an other category because this list is not very comprehensive. Many people on GT use Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, Artemis, Newman's, and Eagle Pack, Organix etc. But otherwise I'd be curious to see the results.

We use Eagle Pack Natural Adult and he gets Buddy Biscuits for treats.

Couldn't vote since our current brand of dog food wasn't listed... Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice

Our adoption group feeds Nutro mostly, and we started with that when we adopted our first GH. But it's kinda spendy and we couldn't (at the time) buy it at our local Fred Meyer. We swtitched to Pedegree dry/canned and have been very happy with it. Especially because it was one of the only "commercial" foods NOT involved in the pet food scandal last year. Plus we like their support of pet adoption and other pet charities.

Our three (male 8 yrs, male 6 yrs, and female 4 yrs) get between 1 cup and 1 1/3 cup Adult variety kibble at each meal with a heaping tablespoon of various canned flavors for variety and some water for gravy twice a day. We're a big treat household and have a whole cabinet well-stocked with a variety of biscuits and treats. They also get some sort of chew bone every night for teeth cleaning purposes.

I quit feeding Nutro and am beginining to be unsure of Royal Canin. I feed Avoderm, Natures Recipe, and just started feeding Bil-Jac. So far, I am impressed with the Bil-Jac. I also feed some of the Pet Botanics roll and Solid Gold Holy Cow Green Tripe.
greyhound1
Pro Plain chicken and rice.
lanielovesgreys
Since we've adopted, they've been on Nutro and ProPlan. Nutro was ok, but they consistenly had loose stools and didn't really seem to like it. We switched to ProPlan after Nutro and Sol started losing hair. sad.gif After a comment at the pet store about his hair loss, I switched to raw. MUCH BETTER and I don't have to worry about kibble anymore.

We switched last week to Kirkland... Prior to that I was feeding a combo of Nutro High Energy and Eukanuba Sensitive Stomach. Out of the 6 dogs, 3 can/will eat nearly anything... 2 have nervous tummys and 1 is a picky (kibble) eater. So far, they are all doing good with the Kirkland. Poops are solid but they do have fart.gif

Does anybody use Blue Bufflo Lamb and whole grain? We started using it whne we brought Zeena home. It was OK for the first few weeks but lately we have been getting loos stools. Not sure if it is the food or somthing else. Zeena seems to enjoy since she does eat it all.
MountainHounds
I feed the Kirkland chicken and rice. The boys get plain kibble in the morning that they graze on all day, then around 8:30 or so at night, they get kibble and a half a can split between the two of them along with water mixed in to make a gravy. Since the mix in canned is more just an enticement to get my slow eater Kamin to eat in a timely manner, I'm not as picky about what they get for canned. I usually just grab a case of the Kirkland canned while I'm at Costco, but I'm not super committed to making sure it's always the Kirkland. A couple of months ago I found those Beneful wet food for super cheap and stocked up. They ate those for a good month. Sometimes I'll grab Merrick if I see it around, occasionally it's Nutro canned.

Harley
Blue Buffalo Lamb (has problem with chicken and so many non chicken foods have chicken products in them). Her poos can be puddingy so I am going to try a little pumpkin in her food. Treats are dehydrated duck strips from Menards.

Moka
Pro Plan Chicken Treats are dehysrated chicken strips from Menards.
Major_Houlihan
Hi,

We feed our grey PUrina ONE chicken and rice dry, mixed with ONE can chicken and rice, mixed with a spoonful of plain yogurt. She was on ONE at the kennel and she has done pretty good with it. I would like to find something that will help get her coat in better shape. (or I should jsut sit back and be patient, lol)
6greyhounds
We use Authority and mix in (about 1 tablespoon of canned) what ever they want we keep a variety of canned food in the house as Ms. Softee who will be 15 in August has her snits. With her we might have 3 or 4 open cans in the refrigerator at any given time... lol.gif
JasnJack
We feed California Natural lamb and rice. Our 2 were on Nutro before we adopted them - they've had a bit of diarrhea while we transitioned them but now (@ 2 1/2 wks) things are firming up nicely and their coats are shiny and soft. We give Wellness yogurt biscuits for treats.
Fiona3
Fiona, Zeke & Bailey are on Pro-Plan Lamb and Rice. I add some canned Purina One to their dishes.
Tasha eats Purina One Sensitive Stomach with some boiled ground turkey on top. She seems to like this and does very well on it.
Treats are limited (Bailey is on a diet) but Paul Newman's Peanut Butter dog treats are given out now and then.
6greyhounds
Softee our soon to be 15 is also on a diet - anything she wants lol.gif - vet says they only get about 60% of nutrition of what they eat at that age
MarcR
I feed the girls Pro Plan Selects salmon and brown rice kibble. They like it and it seems to agree with them. Occasionally, I'll add a small amount of Pro Plan Selects canned salmon and brown rice when her grace, er, Nadia, gets picky. Sardines added to their kibble all around for a special treat.
Batmom
Boys eat IAMs kibble with some canned or homecooked added.

Zema was eating all homecooked, now on a trial of Solid Gold Mmillennia kibble with some canned or homecooked added.

Canned: We use whatever I happen to get -- usually ProPlan/ONE, Tripett, EVO, Chicken Soup, Evanger's 100% meats.

Homecooked: Usually beef + turkey + chicken + egg. Sometimes people leftovers.

Treats: Sometimes homecooked, sometimes store bought. We like the IAMs lamb & rice biscuits (easy to break into small pieces), EVO original biscuits (ditto), any freeze-dried fish, Lakse Kronch, Charlie Bear Egg & Cheese, Simon & Huey, Burpdogs, Baa Baa Q's, graham crackers, animal crackers, rice cakes ........
6greyhounds
Softee aka The Godess went on a snit yesterday and we had to open another brand of dog food for her to get her to eat something. I swear the stinkier and cheaper she enjoys. As long as I get some food into her. After she ate that stinking food she finished her dinner lol.gif
ckruzan
I couldn't vote either, Eagle Pack Holistic was not listed.
jerrybird
I have recently switched to Merrick's Senior diet, both kibble and canned. My guy loves it and he has been a very picky eater over the years.
paulamariez
We just switched from Chicken Soup Senior to Eagle Pack Holistic Senior. Our hounds stopped eating the Chicken Soup for some bizarre reason, so we were forced to switch. We're hoping for the best from the Eagle Pack.
Nelsonismyhero
For my greys and terriers I recently switched to Kirkland Lamb and Rice after having used Canidae for a long time. The greys get glucosamine pills with easy cheese at each meal and sometimes I add chopped apples, green beans, banana, yogurt or cottage cheese as a special treat. My puppy has been on a number of different foods (he's really picky). At the moment he is on Eagle Pack Power Pack mixed with a little bit of Kirkland canned for added taste. Although, I'm planning on adding some BARF into his meals to replace to canned food. He also gets fish oil supplements everyday.

For snacks we give Kirkland biscuits or Milkbones and sometimes I will chop up some fruit or cheese to give as like a "lunch" for them (puppy doesn't like fruit or vegetables). I don't do that everyday, but they usually get biscuits everyday because I like to give them before I leave the house. Every week I will usually give out either pigs ears or bully sticks depending on what I have. They also get scraps from the table if we have anything left over.

SoulsMom
I can't vote, neither of my brands are on there . . .Soul gets a mixture of Natural Balance limited ingredients, and Taste of the Wild Pacific stream.
weycoolgrey
I could not vote, but we feed Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance- Sweet Potato & fish. If we stir anything in, it is either pumpkin or yogurt. Lots of different treats!
greyhound_bug
Switched from Nutro to Canidae All Life Stages back in the fall. The boys love it and so far we are happy with the change.
lionessgrace
I have fed dry Nutro and canned Pedigree but my Grey has always had one nice bowel movement and one soft bowel movement in the same walk. I may try this Canidae food that people have mentioned, but what about Kirkland? Do people like it better than Nutro even?
ProudGreyMom
Molly and Andy eat Iam Naturals with a bit of canned stirred in. Jake eats prescription diet. They never, ever have snausages or any "meaty" looking treats because my first beagle had terrible pancreatitis and I believe that those items added to his illness. So for treats they get dry small dog bisquits or home made bisquits.
greyhoundmom1
Canidae has been the only food that I've purchased and so far so good.....
greyhead
We've switched to Wellness Core Low-Fat, mixed with Natural Balance canned and amended with Missing Link (probiotics and Omega-3's). Now our two greys have the best poops imaginable!

We were using Iams Large Breed kibble, but hair started coming out in patches. Vet said the brand had been sold and the formula had changed.
DeweytheGreyt
I couldn't vote.

Dew & Rox get Fromm's Chicken A'la Veg and Salmon A'la Veg dry food, Fallon gets Merrick's Turducken dry. We use Merrick canned food for everyone on occasion and we usually buy Mother Hubbard or Wellness biscuits.
spirys
We've been feeding our girls Science Diet, dry and canned, and have had no problems. Someone recommended Pedigree, and when I went to the store, I saw it was almost half the cost of the SD, so I bought it. However, the cashier (after she rang me up), told me I was going from very high end to very low end, and could expect a lot of problems. Now, I'm thinking of returnining it. Why mess with what's working? Except it sure would be nice to reduce costs some. Does anyone else have experience with this? Am I getting too worried? One of our girls eats the poop, and someone said that could be because the food we were giving was so high end, so I was thinking the Pedigree might lessen that, but I don't want to feed them junk either. Please advise.
