Hi there! I actually don't have a greyhound ohno.gif but I am looking forward to getting my first one when I graduate college. I love to learn from owners and get real experience rather than vague info from the Internet; I have taken a quick look around and already learned some new things! I have a cat, so I am looking to educate myself on how to make that relationship work out. It's comforting to see posters with cats in their signatures. I'm also really curious to know what DH means! Anyway, I look forward to browsing the site and hopefully getting to meet some people!

P.S. A lot of exclamation points, no?

Greetings from St. Augustine!

I had a cat along with greyhounds, so it can work out real well as long as the grey is cat safe. Keep reading here and you will learn a lot.

sardino,

Where are you located in FL?

One of the best things to do is seek out a local greyhound adoption group and visit with them next time they have a meet and greet or event. Some groups even have their own kennel facilities. Talk to the humans, and hang with the hounds, guarantee you'll learn a lot and will want to take all of the available hounds home with you smile.gif

greenwave.gif We have 2 greys who keep a respectful distance from our kitty. If they get a bit too close, a swipe of her claws has them backing away. Many greyhounds live very harmoniously with cats; but some cannot, so be sure that your new grey has been tested with the kitties. Your adoption group will provide a muzzle that should be used for introductions and until you are sure how your grey reacts. Best wishes when you get your grey; they're such joys!

Thanks for all the replies! I actually have been to a meet-and-greet, and I have even met the dog I would like to bring home one day! The people at the adoption center told me pretty much the same thing about greys and cats; my cat is pretty tough, and has experience living with dogs. I guess I'm just worried that her fits of chasing things might trigger the dog's prey drive. I think it's just normal pre-dog anxieties, though.

I'm located in Miami, by the way. The local group is Friends of Greyhounds.

Hi from Tampa, there's some FOG volunteers on here from time to time. Which college do you attend?
Lots of greys do just fine with cats, usually it's the cat that has to get used to them!

Nice to meet you! We had two cats when we got our first couple of greyhounds and it all worked out pretty well. I had to protect one of mine from one of the cats on a number of occasions, though.

welcome from Philly PA...............i have 2 GH's and 3 cats 2 of whom randomly have 'bug up their but' running fits (usually chasing each other) and apart from the initial firm " leave it!" statement at the immediate first glance at the meyhem from my GH's Ive had no trouble. Its so funny to see them glance up from thier bed- eyes only, no head movement- and watch the 2 black and white furrballs fly by. Lazy dogs! they are cat safe though with no prey drive at all. it may take mroe time with a "cat workable' dog........but nothing a little diligence wont solve!

Welcome ! And good for you for learning as much as you can before you adopt biggrin.gif

My poor Penny lives with 10-15 cats depending on which week it is (I rescue and adopt them out). You should be able to find a greyhound that fits perfectly into your home!

You will also see DD, DS, DW etc... dear daughter, dear son, dear wife.... I wonder if this is a greyhound-people thing. This is the only place I see or use them.. hmmm....

You will see other strange acronyms, too... like ETS. oh, and when you go to Cute & Funny, keep in mind that greyhounds do not spell very well smile.gif

Hello and welcome from a fellow Miamian, FIU'er, AND FOG Dog adopter! We adopted our girl Wendy from FOG a little over one year ago (God bless you, Michelle! kiss1.gif ) and have never for a second regretted our decision.

I think that your pre-adoption anxiety is a good sign that you will be a responsible pet owner. I researched and debated for over a year before finally taking the plunge.

Keep in touch and let us know how things go.

P.S. I work at the University Park Campus. greenwave.gif

Another Miami FoG adopter/volunteer here. (Hi Irene -LaFlaca greenwave.gif, we need to catch up soon). When (not if) you adopt your hound you will have a "Greyhound Godmother" She will be available 24/7 for questions and concerns as are Jerry and Michelle. And you know you are more than welcome to come to the open house every Saturday and Sunday and play with the hounds. Come around often enough and we will put you to work! Welcome to GT.

It's great to see so many Floridians! I think coming down to FoG to play with the dogs is a great idea. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!
